Think before you leap at Multnomah Falls

We were visiting Multnomah Falls and decided we wanted to hike to the viewpoint.  On the way there, Mr. N spots something moving in the bushes and wants to dive after it. Natural dog behavior right? Well it gets problematic when said bushes are a hundred feet down a steep slope. I could see that he was getting ready to jump so I held onto the leash tight and told him not to even think about it.

This is how high he wants to jump down from.
He always wants to walk on the ledge and look down at things. We passed by a blind dog whose owner said that he likes to walk on the side opposite the ledge so that he knows he is not going to fall. I replied that Mr. N likes to do the opposite because he has no sense of self-preservation.

We ran into a very brave chipmunk that was nibbling on some Cheetos on the path who didn't move. Mr. N was three or four feet away and about to pounce. A sharp leave it stopped him in time but it was a near call for that chipmunk. Somehow I do not think it will survive to raise many offspring.

As we walk by this woman, she says, "don't bite me, don't bite me." Mr. N is walking on a loose leash, a couple of feet away from her. He is not barking, growling, lunging or even looking in the woman's direction.

What was up with that? He showed no interest in her at all. And he was clearly on leash and under control.

Poor Mr. N. Getting blamed for mischief he didn't even do!

Mr. N is not impressed by scenery. He prefers the sight of rodents.

  1. Very cool waterfall, the shot from above in particular. Mr. N likes to live on the edge I guess ;)

    1. He does. He likes running up and down the rocks on the edge and it takes him about the same amount of time it take me to walk normally on the trail.

  2. Beautiful photos and I especially love the second one. My N looks like he's very proud of himself and such a terrier :)

    1. Thank you. It was a lovely day and I love waterfalls. There's another trail that has multiple falls but dogs aren't allowed there.

  4. The scenery is amazing! But rodents are so tempting for little terriers.

    1. They are indeed. Prey in general. We take him to the farm store sometimes and he gets so excited to see the ducks and rabbits.

  5. What a gorgeous day in the gorge! Maybe the "don't bite me" lady was joking? We have run into a lot of not nice, illegally off-leash dogs hiking Multnomah Falls. It's too bad those bad seeds give nice, legally leashed hiking dogs a bad wrap!

    1. Maybe. We run into off-leash dogs everywhere but curiously we did not see any that day. It gets very annoying when we're trying to hike peacefully and dogs come running up to us.

  7. Pretty place. Some people just don't like dogs or are afraid of them. I bet Mr. N is a good ambassador for doggies.

    1. He tries to be. We were giving her the most space we could on the trail.

  8. Dang it boy! My N is a brave boy!!! I, myself, am scared of heights so that was rather scary looking! Don't let those folks pic on him either! Poor Mr N!

  9. OMG, that first picture made me dizzy. I'm a bit afraid of heights and would never be able to get so close to edge. Fortunately, I live in the midwest where everything is flat. Tell Mr. N he is very brave, but don't get too close to that ledge. Beautiful pictures!

    1. He loves to walk on the ledges when we hike so he's always wearing a sturdy harness and leash!

  10. Clearly that woman needed some attention, huh? Some people are nuts. She should meet the crazy chipmunk!

  11. What beautiful pictures! I guess Mr N is one brave little pup! I think my dog might do that too.

  12. That is a long way down, Mr. N! Pierre would have been after the chipmunk too. You should have growled at the lady yourself. BOL!

WaitAMinnit >>> The lady said that PERLEEEEZE?!?!?!?! Mr N is not exactly a massive dog is he?? *eyeroll* Even as none dog people that made us ashamed - Sorry Mr N not all of us are like that silly lady!

    1. I understand that some people are afraid of dogs and I do my best to accommodate that if they tell me about it but there was really nothing more I could do in that situation. Plus Mr. N is as un-scary looking as you can get for a dog IMO.

  14. First I love your pics at Multnomah Falls - so fun you took N there for a hike. That ledge looks scary - and what a silly chipmunk for eating Cheetos. Mr. N does such a great job with his commands and I know he's in total control as you're training is rock solid!

    1. It's a fun hike. We should go sometime when the crowd gets smaller.

  15. Maybe the woman is afraid of dogs? In any case, your walk sounds like it was rather interesting!

    1. Oh I mean I think she was but there was really nothing else I could do. Mr. N was on a leash, ignoring her and walking as far away from her on the narrow path as we could get.

  16. Those falls look beautiful! What a great place to hike. I'll bet Mr. N loved it!

Loved your observation of the chipmunk ;-)

  17. Wow what a gorgeous place, but scary moment! I'm afraid of heights so we probably wouldn't get as close to the ledge. I would start to panic LOL!

  18. What a beautiful place to visit! Mr. N is a lucky pup to get to see such places. :) I'm glad he didn't jump off a cliff to chase something. It is a good thing that he has such an attentive mom. As for the woman with the biting comment - she is the one with the problem. Apparently she has had bad luck with dogs. Mr. N is not exactly vicious looking. LOL

  19. Isn't it amazing how determined our dogs can be to kill themselves? No self preservation at all! Those sights look amazing, though!

  20. I have one dog who wants to watch on the edge of everything! I am sure the view is better the close you are to the edge!

  21. It's a good thing you're very attuned to Mr. N and watch him closely.

  22. What beautiful photos! Looks and sounds like a fun adventure :) Mr N sure is brave!

  23. It looks like a lovely hike, but I admit, it makes my hands sweat a little to see Mr. N on the ledge. I always think I don't have a fear of heights, but I obviously do.

  24. What a beautiful place! I love the photo of Mr. N "perched!" That chipmunk was very lucky I wasn't on that trail with my Huskies! (Rot-ohh!) And what's up with that lady? Sheesh. Poor Mr. N being all good and innocent and getting a bum rap!
