Monday Mischief #7 - Oblivious Human

I was cleaning up around the house when Mr. N started acting like he wanted something. He usually stares at you intensely and sometimes makes little whining noises. He had been taken out two hours ago so I figured he wanted another snack and I told him no. He wandered off and I started the dishes.

I finished and looked around for Mr. N. I didn't see him in any of his usual spots: his bed by the bookshelf, the couch or our bed. I wondered if he was feeling sick and hiding in a corner.

Finally, I spotted him waiting patiently by the front door for me to notice him. He decided the oblivious human needed a more obvious signal. I took him out and gave him a treat for being good. And obvious!

Who says small dogs can't be housebroken?
*He is housebroken and has been for years. The humans just needed a little help.

  1. Roooo Mr N - top marks for training your human to read your signals. Sometimes they can be soooo slow to learn *Waggy tail*

    1. I'm sure they all think we are the most oblivious beasts ever.

  2. Small dogs can be house broke as easily as big dogs. Roxy does the same thing.

    1. We've never really had trouble on that front but I hear a lot of people complaining about how hard it is to potty train their small dogs.

  4. Nice work, Mr. N! I absolutely think small dogs can be trained as well as big dogs. Moses and Alma do a similar thing - make some eye contact and then go wait by the back door. My parents actually have bells on their door that their dog knows to use when he needs to go out.

    1. So at one point, I tried to train Mr. N to use bells. He didn't take to it and I thought he didn't make the connection. One day, he really needed to go out and we were being oblivious. After trying to signal us, he goes over to the door and hit the bells. He knew the whole time! He just didn't like using them for whatever reason.

  6. Most excellent! Small dogs can be housebroken. They just need good, consistent humans. I'm not that kind of human. :)

    1. It depends on the dog too. His former foster trained him and she said he learned how to use the dog door to go out in a day.

  7. Cute! Rita does that too. She is totally housebroken, but doesn't know how to "ask" to go outside, so she'll just sit quietly by the door until someone notices her! I keep telling her she needs to "say something!" - whine or knock! She's such a funny girl.

    1. They are funny creatures. He usually "asks" but I just missed it this time.

  9. I'd never say that about small dogs...To make it a little easier for Gizmo (since I can be a little oblivious at times) i hung a cowbell from the doorknob that hangs down to about 8" above the floor...when he wants to go out Gizmo bats at it and it gets my attention
