Wordless Wednesday #16 - Home for the Holidays?

Dear Blogosphere,

I need ideas for how to advertise my foster dog further and/or make him more adoptable. He wears his "adopt me" vest outdoors on walks, several pet stores have posted his profile on their Facebook pages and we go to adoption events at Petsmart.

He is housebroken, good with other dogs, and leash trained. Onyxx also knows a few tricks (shake, play dead) etc. He wants to eat all the food and will have to be crated when you're out but other than that, he's generally a very easy dog who just wants cuddles and food. We're setting up his first meet and greet (after two months!) but just in case that doesn't work out, I need a backup plan.

What more can I do? Besides dressing him up as an elf/Sugar Plum Fairy?

  2. Those photos definitely help! There has been a lot of research on how far adorable photos of adoptable dogs can go in getting them adopted. I'm going to e-mail you with another idea I have (regarding what a great pet he'd make for an older person that won't let him get fat!)

  3. Good grief, he's such a little cutie, I would have thought he'd be snapped up! He probably just needs to have a photo taken with a lightish background doing a head tilt. I'm sure he will find a home soon, good luck!

    1. Maybe his own Facebook page. That's being added to the project list if the meet doesn't work out. Thanks!

  5. I like 2Browndawgs idea. Are you working with a Rescue? Have they posted him on their page or through Adopt-a Pet or PetFinder? He's such a cutie.

  6. Photos are a good start. Have you tried the Tuesday Tails BlogHop by DogsnPawz yet? could feature him on that - looks like you've got a whole story on him already

  8. So cute! Post pics of him looking at camera if you can, so really see his adorable face. We can share one of these in Rescues Rock on our site and promote if you want? Not sure how many people close enough would see, but Roxy and Diesel, the 2 bonded chis that I featured a few weeks ago got adopted this week finally. The more who get the message to adopt the merrier and more likely. Who do people contact? A Rescue or you directly?

  9. I'm surprised he hasn't been snapped up, I haven't got any other ideas apart from those already mentioned,

  11. My husband has great luck (with everything from restaurants to getting our street plowed by the city) on Twitter! Try tweeting (or instagram) a new tidbit about him each day with several different hashtags like #cutestdogever, #dogoftheday, #smalldog, #dailypuppy, etc.

I also wanted to invite you to participate in my new blog hop. It's called WinsDay and it's all about celebrating your dog showing/training wins!

    1. Thanks for the tip! It seems to have really worked for your husband. We're not actively training right now (at least class-wise) but when we do, I'll keep the blog hop in mind.

  13. He is sooo cute... have you thought of making a video, then linking that video to one of the code thingys? And just place the code with his picture... so that when people scan it with their smart phone they see his videos? Just a thought.

    1. Good idea. We might try to work on a video this weekend. It's been so dismal though that we've had barely any natural light and black dogs are hard to photograph!

  16. He's quite cute so I have no idea why he hasn't been adopted. Black Dog Syndrome I guess, but that usually only applies to the big dogs.....

    1. I'm thinking it might be BBD coupled with the Chihuahua thing. There are so many of them (Chihuahuas) in shelters. I joke that I'm going to dress Onyxx up as a Yorkie and he'll be adopted in a flash. Or do an experiment where I take Mr. N out with the "adopt me" vest and see how many inquires we get.

  17. Elf/sugar plum fairy! Now that would be cuteness overload. I have had quite the success adopting out cats over the years by posting photos at my place of work (600+ employees), and just getting out the word there. If you know of anybody that works for a large organization (or really just any workplace), ask if they have a place to post items. You might be surprised at the response you get! It has worked well for me...three kitties over the years ADOPTED!!!

  19. After our experience with foster dogs, I'd highly reccomend some Xmas themed photos! Have the rescue change the photos on his page to the Xmas photos, and send us some to share on our blog & fb! If you can send us the link to his page on the rescue we would love to promote. Our final foster dog in Kansas, Maverick was adopted b/c of his cute xmas antlers photo caught their eye!

    1. I think we missed all the Santa photos. We do have a Valentine-themed tie around somewhere... I'll send you his Petfinder link. We should get together soon!

  20. These pics are so cute!! I can't believe he hasn't been adopted...I'd think that the little ones would go first. Have you tried posting at your local library? Many seniors visit libraries and if he's pretty easy to take care of...maybe that would work out! Best of luck to finding him his forever home.
