Pet Blogger Challenge 2014

I'm participating in the Pet Blogger Challenge for the first time, hosted by Go Pet Friendlyand Will My Dog Hate Me?

1. How long have you been blogging? Please tell us why you started blogging, and, for anyone stopping by for the first time, give us a quick description of what your blog is about.
I started blogging in August. I think I was wearing the boyfriend out with various dog stories and I needed to find a more welcoming audience!
I blog about Mr. N and his various adventures. I'd also like for this blog to be a platform to show that small dogs are capable of doing almost everything (there are certain heigh limitations...). Mr. N hikes, competes in dog sport(s), fetches and does tricks.
2. Name one thing about your blog, or one blogging goal that you accomplished during 2013, that made you most proud.
Probably starting the blog! I debated over it for months before finally starting it in August. It took me way longer than it should have to come up with a name and I changed it once in the process.
3. When you look at the post you wrote for last year’s Pet Blogger Challenge, or just think back over the past year, what about blogging has changed the most for you?
I haven't blogged for a full year yet so I'll pass on this one.
4. What lessons have you learned this year – from other blogs, or through your own experience – that could help us all with our own sites?
The interwebs can always use more kawaii. My most popular post has been the one of Mr. N posing in the middle of a bunch of stuffed animals.
If you could ask the pet blogging community for help with one challenge you’re having with your blog, what would it be?
What do they like about my blog? What topics would they like to hear about? What changes do they think I should make?
5. What have you found to be the best ways to bring more traffic to your blog, other than by writing great content?
I join a lot of blog hops. I've discovered a lot of new blogs to me that way and some bloggers have found me that way.
6. How much time to do you spend publicizing your blog, and do you think you should spend more or less in the coming year?
Not much. I'll post things on Facebook ocassionally. I need to be more diligent about social media.
7. How do you gauge whether or not what you’re writing is appealing to your audience?
Usually comments. Although my picture posts seem to get the most comments so...
How do you know when it’s time to let go of a feature or theme that you’ve been writing about for a while?
I haven't been writing long enough to have regular features and/or themes unless you count blog hops.
8. When you’re visiting other blogs, what inspires you to comment on a post rather than just reading and moving on?
Topics that I find interesting or that I relate to. Great photography.
9. Do you do product reviews and/or giveaways?
No, but I plan to this year.
If so, what do you find works best, and what doesn’t work at all?
If not, is this something you’d like to do more of? What hurdle is getting in your way?
It takes more time and effort to write those posts sometimes. Also Mr. N is kind of particular about toys and food which doesn't help.
10. When writer’s block strikes and you’re feeling dog-tired, how do you recharge?
A walk with the dog(s) helps clear the cobwebs from my head. I also believe in long baths with a page-turner, high quality dark chocolate and baking.
11. Have you ever taken a break from your blog? How did that go?
No, aside from a few days around the holidays.
Have you ever thought about quitting your blog altogether? What makes you stay?
Not yet!
12. What goals do you have for your blog in 2014?
Hosting a blog hop (which I did last week).
I'd like to organize a blogger meetup. Cascadian Nomads and I were discussing holding one for Pacific Northwestern bloggers.
Attending a conference. It may not happen in 2014 but maybe 2015.
Possibly a blog redesign.
Better photography. Our camera still needs to go to the shop...

I'm teaching Mr. N how to "hug" on command

    1. Thanks, Roxy. On that note, the boyfriend once said he thinks Mr. N secretly practices cute poses while we sleep. Who knows!

  3. I had to laugh at your reason for blogging! I have a similar secondary reason myself, but I don't frequently mention it. You see, a lot of my close friends don't own any pets, and like a non-parent who is marginally disinterested in other people's stories of their kids, I didn't want to be that person who only talks about her dog to her friends. If I put it on the internet, I have an outlet for that! (Also frees up the Facebook page to more diversity, too!) And then my friends can choose whether or not to hear the stories, and if they choose not to, that's totally okay.
I had no idea you were only blogging since August - I totally thought it had been longer! In a good way.
Can SW Canadians come to your potential meet up?!

PS. Cute photo! Hugging on command... genius & adorable! You'll have to YouTube that or make a gif or something!

    1. I don't have many dog friends either (aside from online) which is also one of the reasons for the blog. I met a fellow dog blogger who lives in Portland now and we go to dog events together sometimes.
SW Canadians are totally welcome (and Californians)! I just didn't know if people would want to drive that far. I was thinking along the lines of pooling our money together and renting a beach house during off season on the coast somewhere. The dogs could play on the beach and we can talk about dogs to our heart's content.
I saw the "hug" trick online and I was like must teach this. If people are interested, I can explain it further.

  4. This must be the year for new bloggers! Welcome. It sounds like you're already doing good things, getting on board blog hops. I might have to follow you for a while just so I can say abreast of the blog hops I can partake in. All the best for 2014.

  5. I wasn't going to do this hop because I thought "who cares?" Especially since my blog is also so new. But I have really enjoyed reading everyone's answers so far today. I look forward to a doing a fun meet-up! I have super cabin fever right now. And if your photography needs to be improved... do not look at my blurry photo-ed post today! :)

    1. Yeah, it was interesting to see how people answered and how much they differed or were the same as mine. We should work on this meet-up plan! I feel like my photography is very slapdash lol. I strive for "cute."

  6. I am really enjoying this hop today! Visiting as many as I can and I've learned so much about everybody and their blogs! This is the first time I am doing this hop as I am still very much a "newbie"
Thanks for sharing your blogging story! I enjoyed it!!

  7. I am so thrilled every time I hear a small dog person talk about giving their dog a chance to have big dog fun. I've never had a small dog of my own but I've fostered a few. And every dog deserves to have lots of adventures and not just be stuck in someone's handbag (not that there's anything wrong with that; it's just unfair for dogs to be treated like accessories all the time).

    Hooray for Tenacious Little Terrier!

This is my 4th Pet Blogger Challenge and it's fun to see how much the first year bloggers are saying the same kinds of things I and other 4 year bloggers said when we first began. :)

    1. Thanks! Mr. N geniunely likes going to new places and doing new things. And I enjoy taking him. He does have a purse though for when we go to crowded places. People don't look down that far!

  8. So glad to see that you joined the challenge! It will be fun next year too when you get to look back at it!

I think your photography is great and seeing Mr.N always makes me smile.

  9. Our blogs are very similar in that we "show that small dogs are capable of doing almost everything". As for a group for Pacific Northwestern bloggers, there is one. I started it a couple years ago. Sometimes we meet in person in Seattle so it would be hard for you to get here but sometimes we have virtual meetups. I am currently in the process of organizing a one-day conference for dog lovers, pet bloggers and aspiring pet bloggers. Bethany is part of my group so I am surprised that she didn't mention it to you. You can check it out and join here: http://www.meetup.com/Northwest-Pet-Bloggers/

  10. PS....I am driving to BlogPaws in Vegas from Seattle and looking for someone to share a room with me. If you had a week free, we could stop and pick you up and you could share a room with us to keep the cost down (I have to double check that we could have 3 dogs in the room). I would just ask that you share the cost of the room (about $300) and gas (probably around $150). Closer to the conference, some bloggers end up hosting a giveaway for conference tickets or sponsoring someone by giving them a ticket. Think about it because BlogPaws will be on the East coast next year and way more expensive for us west coasters to travel to.

  11. I am hoping to see you at the conference. Though this year BlogPaws won't have any giveaways or bloggers who offer the tickets, I really encourage you to purchase sooner than later because we will sell out. Many wags and nice to come on your blog!

  13. Congratulations on starting your blog! And welcome to the Petosphere! It seems like you have gotten off to a pretty bangin' start and have a much better handle on all of this than I ever did. Your photos are stunning and Mr. N is precious. I look forward to watching you grow!

  14. I think you're doing phenomenally well! I haven't been on top of blog hops, but it sounds like that's working for you, so I may have to integrate them better this year! You have a set of really solid goals, and I'm confident you'll be able to achieve them all. Looking forward to seeing what 2014 has in store for you and adorable Mr. N!
