Every Dog Deserves to have Adventures

It's hard sometimes not to overcoddle your small dog. There's so many dangers out there: hawks, coyotes, careless children (Mr. N had a leg fracture from a kid stepping on him in his previous life), aggressive dogs.

Sometimes you feel like putting them in a giant bubble and never letting them out. And there are small dog people who do that whose dogs are exercised indoors and their feet barely touch the ground outdoors.

And I've been tempted. Mr. N has almost been attacked twice by aggressive dogs while out on a walk. But he would hate it. And so despite my fear, I try to give Mr. N a variety of experiences and let him explore.
Because every dog deserves to have adventures (thanks to Pamela for the phrase). And Mr. N doesn't believe in limits.

So earlier this week, we met up with Sage, a lovely Border Collie/Kelpie to go for a hike at Thousand Acres. It was really windy when we got there so we headed for the wooded area to escape the wind. They got along pretty well which meant that Sage didn't try to herd him and Mr. N enjoyed chasing after Sage. He was thrilled to have a new playmate that had no trouble keeping up with him.

Sage is a mud and water aficionado which Mr. N is not. She jumped into every mud puddle and body of water we came across. Mr. N went exploring instead.

She clearly thought Mr. N was crazy for not wanting to come into the water so Sage kindly shared the water and mud experience and he got a little wet and muddy as well (baths for everyone!). Luckily, she did not transfer the green "fragrance" that she found in a mud puddle to Mr. N. Sage's human and I took turns telling her not to come too close.

Later on, Sage got entangled with a thorny branch and Mr. N helped get it off her. Although honestly, I'm still not sure if he thought it was a game or if he sensed that it hurt and she needed help.

Whatever the reason, he looks so proud of himself in this picture.

And then Sage found a stray ball and it was time for river fetch.

After about two hours, we said our goodbyes and headed home so the dogs could get baths. They both really needed them! Mr. N and I both enjoyed ourselves (he had a good nap in the car but was perky again afterwards lol) and we hope to meet up with Sage and her human again soon.

  3. So glad you caught his helping on camera. How adorable!

I try to be nice to little doggies by gently laying a paw on them instead of pouncing around like I normally do, but sometimes they run under my legs. I accidentally stepped on my tiny neighbor that way, but he was okay!

Thanks for stopping by our blog! My heart treats came from petco. The cashier gave me a bunch to snack on at home cuz I wouldn't stop sniffing them.

  4. Even though Nailah isn't a small dog I have the same fears as you. She too has been attacked by dogs (3 times now) and every time it's happened I get paranoid for months. Even though I want to keep her safe I know it's better to let her live her life to the fullest instead of keeping her locked away. Glad you guys got to enjoy such a fun doggy outing!

  5. Yes, we definitely will have to do this again--hopefully on a less windy day! Sage had a really good time with Mr. N. It's always interesting to see how two dogs that don't know each other will interact...I think they both did well.

  6. Hi Y'all!

Looks like Sage was givin' Mr. N some lessons in the "finer things in life".

    Y'all come by now,

  7. Those pictures of Mr. N pulling the branch off of Sage is the sweetest thing! What a good friend!

I also share your fears even though my Barley is a big girl. She is very reactive, so even non-aggressive, off-leash dogs who approach her upset her and can set us back months in our training, but she loves adventuring so much that I could never deprive her of our hikes. I do everything I can to help her feel safe and keep her from having to interact with other dogs when we see them and it sounds like you do the same thing for Mr. N!

  8. How fun to be allowed to play in the mud and water! We are very over-protective also : )

  9. What a fun day you all had! I've never been near a body of water before, and I'm 6 yrs old already, but I do love playing outside...come rain, sun, snow or huge hawks that fly overhead and scare Mommy!
I really loved the two photos of Mr. N pulling the stick off of Sage. Us dogs know when we need to lend a helping paw (or snout in this case). Come by and visit my blog sometime my new friend!

  10. That looks like a fun time. Love the picture of the other dogs running in the background. Looks like a popular place! It is easy not to let the dogs out to do what they love. I totally understand that thinking. Hunting dogs face many dangers. But you can't just keep them in a box. They would be miserable. It was nice of Mr. N to help his pal!

PS my Friday post is about teaching whistle sit. :)

  12. Look how much fun Mr N is having and what a stunning area! I share your concern because you hear stories of encounters gone wrong, but Jack needs adventure like everyone else so when he's off leash we don't let him get too far away from us and remain super vigilant.

  13. What a wonderful adventure & a great post, love these photos! I fully agree that every dog deserves, & in fact needs, some adventure in their lives. Just because a dog is small doesn't mean they should be treated like a doll on a shelf, they carry as much of their wolf ancestral genes as any other dog!

  14. Ted loves exploring new sniff zones. We are not great at giving him new adventures, which I know he needs, probably because he gets so car sick that we tend to avoid the car for more than a few minutes.

  15. Great post and I so agree how ever much we worry about them they need adventures, I try to take Layla every week to another park or beach as we live in the city and she loves it, LOL, she loves riding on the bus

  16. Really fun! We work really hard to provide a very typical doggy experience balanced with some serious human-based spoiling...so we feel you! Looks like Mr. N had a truly amazing time!

  18. Adventures are awesome. New places bring a whole new experience; it's always exciting.

  19. What a fun trip! I hate to think that people would keep dogs from being dogs in the great outdoors because of their size. Were those bear tracks in the first picture!?

    1. I think they're probably just multiple dog tracks. Or coyote tracks. I don't think we have bears around here.

  20. I would be really protective of Mr. N too. No pet mommy wants to see their furbaby get hurt! I'm glad to see that Mr. N found a friend to have fun with. It looks like it was a great day!

  21. Yes, adventures need to be a regular part of our lives. Mr. N is so very lucky to have a Mom who allows him to flourish to the fullest. Go Mr. N!

  22. Mr. N, you're so lucky you have such a great Mom who takes you to such great places. We love reading about them.

  23. Our guys love adventures too. Mr. N. obviously loves all the experiences you share with him. It is difficult not to be an overprotective pet parent. Especially when they have had traumatic experiences in the past.

  28. Mr N looks really happy and i am so glad that he has such a sensible mom who takes him out on adventures where he can still have a run and be safe. Loved his pic with Sage where he is trying to rescue him from a branch/ using it for tug of war

  29. You're right, it's hard not to feel over protective of our pups, particularly when they're smaller in size. What Mr.N lacks in size he makes up for in personality and I'm sure he gives many larger dogs a run for their money. Kudos to you for having adventures that are larger than life!
