Mr. N was severely displeased when I disappeared for most of the weekend to attend ClickerExpo. Mr. N hates it when I go somewhere without him. And he really hates it when I train without him. And I'm rarely gone for that long.
So he sat home and moped. He didn't want to go for a walk. He didn't want to eat his Kong. He sat by the door and watched for me and followed the boyfriend around and typed SOS messages on the laptop.
He likes people and strangers and getting attention from people but he is also very much a one person dog.
When I came home, he demanded attention and petting and food and playtime. All at the same time. He obviously thought he was severely neglected. In his defense, the boyfriend did try to take Mr. N on a walk (to somewhere novel), and brushed him and let Mr. N steal his computer.
And to make matters worse, I smelled like strange dogs and hot dogs and cheese and had dog fur all over my black pants. Mr. N did eventually forgive me and cuddled next to me while we napped and deigned to use my arm as a headrest.
How do your dogs react when you're gone for a while? Do they react to smelling other dogs on you?

The majority of children who meet Mr. N have no idea whatsoever how to greet dogs properly. They run up to him yelling "puppy" ...
Luckily, Mom rarely goes on "vacation" without us. She has never left since we have had Bailie, but Katie and I always sat by the front window waiting for her. The first few days we don't want to walk much because we fear Mom will return and we won't be there. We are thrilled when she is back, don't care how she smells. Glad you two are back together.
ReplyDeleteI rarely go anywhere but work without Barley and she's used to being left for a while because of work, but one time I took her up to campus so I could drop a library book in the book drop and she went crazy finally getting to smell the place I come home smelling like every day! Rumor has it, when I do leave her with my parents, she is very calm (I find this hard to believe) around the house and very well behaved on her walks, but she's always so excited to see me that she doesn't care if I come back smelling like several other dogs!
ReplyDeleteFive minutes or a whole weekend, the dogs sniff me up one side and down the other. If I've been with dogs, they just spend a lot longer sniffing.

The photo is priceless - definitely frame worthy. Harley is the exact same way. He lays by the door for hours waiting. If I'm gone overnight, Doodle Dad will wait until dinner time to close the front door. This is when he realizes I won't be home until morning. I usually sit on the floor as soon as I walk in and do nothing but play with him for the first 30 minutes, then all is right with his Doodle world once again.
ReplyDeleteKilo is very much a one person dog as well.
ReplyDeleteOh, poor Mr. N, that photo is so sweet! Our dogs aren't more attached to either my hubby or me, I don't think, but if either of us is gone, they bark at every noise they hear. It's rare that we both leave them other than going to work, but when we do they're pretty good with my sister. They do act very excited whenever I get home from work or elsewhere though, and Luke especially has to stick by me closely.

I've never left Rita alone with the hubs for more than a day. She looks for me, but she'll go for walks and naps with him. When we both go away, she clings to my sister (my sis and her hubs dog sit for us) like Velcro. She gets so excited when we come home! It's nice to be missed!
