Taken in the "misting" stage before it started pouring |
Portland is notorious for rain but we've been having even more of a wet deluge than normal. Normally, it mists. But we've been getting full-out rain and it's quite miserable for the pup. We walk every day pretty much despite the weather and Mr. N comes home a soggy mess despite wearing a rain coat. He has hair not fur so no insulation at all.
We met up with Sage this past week to let the dogs run and Mr. N was positively soaked from head to tail. Even he decided he needed a bath and he followed me into the kitchen (where I bathe him in the sink) which he never does.
It has been adding extra time to walk time because I have to get him dressed, undress him, wash his paws/legs/tail/belly, dry him, heat up something warm for him to eat, throw the coat in the washer and rinse off his leash and my shoes.
We're traveling this weekend so I hope the rain doesn't follow us. Do you have any tips to deal with walking in the rain?
Invest in some puppy booties! They keep feet warm and dry in the rain and the snow, and it saves time washing off our toes after we come in from the rain!
ReplyDeleteWe don't get too many big rain spells. We just wear out normal furs and it doesn't bother us much at all. We get toweled and wiped down when we get back home. Hope you all can dry out before Mr. N starts to get moldy!
ReplyDeleteThat's too bad. Sounds like you need full body gear, hope the rain stops soon!
ReplyDeleteIt's the rainy season! It just is what it is - here in Seattle we can put on coats and boots, etc., and we still get wet. Hang in there!
ReplyDeleteNo tips here as we rarely get any rain. Luckily when we do, we can typically just wait it out.
ReplyDeleteI went to Portland this time of the year about 2 years ago. The rain was awful. I wish I had some tips to give you!
ReplyDeleteWhen I wear my raincoat, Mom only has to dry off my snout, tail, and legs. Everything else is covered. We walk mostly on pavement, so there's that....
ReplyDeleteWe don't get that much rain here... and us cats don't like getting our feet wet. Bet you'd look super cute in those doggie rain boots though.
ReplyDeleteI wish I had tips to offer you, but Barely refuses to go out when it rains, so we only walk in the rain if we accidentally get caught in a storm. I feel you pain about the extra time, though--there are times when it's super cold and snowy here that sometimes it takes us longer to bundle up and get ready to walk than it does to actually take a walk. Good luck escaping the rain with your travels!
ReplyDeleteOur animals are all dogs and they do not like going out in the rain. We travel full time so going out always means being walked on a leash. We have an indoor outdoor mat both inside and outside of our rv and we wipe feet before they can come inside.
ReplyDeleteWe're not big fans of walking in the rain as Rocco becomes a soggy mess, too. I wind up playing more indoor games.
ReplyDeleteWe are in the throes of massive flooding in our area. While we are safe and dry many friends have lost their homes in the 18+" that have fallen over the past two days. We have been able to keep up with our walks so the boys are happy.
ReplyDeleteI feel your pain, we've had rain for almost a week now.
ReplyDeleteI guess that is one good thing about having Chessies, they are waterproof. Hope you have a nice dry weekend!
ReplyDeleteWe deal with this with wet roadsides from melting snow. Ted insists on walking in the dirt and dirty snow instead of the dry road. I just let him have at it and put him in the sink to clean off his "undercarriage" and legs when we get home. We don't do rain - except if it's light and warm out.
ReplyDeleteWow, it sounds like walks have become a major ordeal for you over there! I hope the rain stops soon and the sun comes out. I bet Mr. N would love to have some sunny days right about now :)
ReplyDeleteOur doggie hates the rain and tries to avoid going outside to even go potty! He should be thankful that he doesn't live in the Pacific Northwest (where I grew up!). But living in So Cal, I don't have many tips for walking in the rain since it doesn't come up often. The bootie suggestion sounds good though!
ReplyDeleteKilo and I are not fans of walking in the rain. He seems to quite like smelling mud but not getting wet or muddy. I keep special towels by the door but a pain. I hate the mud as he jumps on the white sofas to get warm and dry off if I am not quick.
ReplyDeleteI grew up in Portland and love the city but don't miss the weather at all. My sister and brother still live there and one is a pet owner. What a hassle when I hear her talk about the rain and going for walks. I'm so glad I live in sunny Colorado!!!!
ReplyDeleteWe tend to avoid walking or playing in the rain. We do better than we used to though, we will get out as long as it's not pouring. I need to get raincoats for the crew but dealing with 3 soaking wet dogs is just too much for me!

Oh, poor Mr. N getting soaked just to be able to get a walk. I would have suggested the rain coat but apparently that's not enough. We live in Phoenix where it almost never rains so we don't have that issue, we just have to deal with extreme heat. Stay dry, my friend!

I swear I'm moving to Arizona. It rained most of the weekend too - and the dogs are so done with wet walks. We're getting crazy wind to which makes Shermie nervous - I'm SO with YOU.
ReplyDeleteRain sucks. We usually stay in and play lots of games! Along with cuddles and naps!
ReplyDeleteWhat an adorable photo! My Siberian Huskies are not fans of rain, so walks are really quick! Now, the mud that follows is a whole different story. They sure love that! ;-0
ReplyDeleteI hope you had a nice dry weekend! I don't have any tips for the rain, but I'm hoping it moved on while you were away.
ReplyDeleteWe know we wouldn't be any help because we don't go outside. We hope you have some drier weather soon.
ReplyDeleteI love when it rains, I try to get as muddy as I can!!! :)
ReplyDeleteOh dear. I hope the rain goes away soon! It can be a pain.
ReplyDeleteIt was great getting to meet you in person this weekend! At least there was a little less rain here for you. It would be tough to walk a little dog with all of the puddles and mud. If I had a dog, I would probably just do laps inside of PetSmart or another pet-friendly store.
