Mr. N says they're all his. |
- Stuffing the Kong: Easiest Kong ever. Just put a few spoonfuls of canned food in the Kong and freeze.
- Training: Spread thinly on a long-handled spoon (especially great for small dogs) or in a food tube.
- Palatability: Great for mixing in with kibble as a treat or coaxing dogs to eat.
- Adding more water to your dog's diet: Canned food has a high water content which is great for dogs that tend not to drink enough or during the summer when dogs get more easily dehydrated.
- Emergency backup food: For when you run out of kibble or forget to thaw raw food.

The Merrick food is grain-free, protein-rich, made in the USA and the cans are BPA-free. And Mr. N eagerly eats it which is a big deciding factor. I'd prefer it if the ingredients didn't include guar gum though.
Do you feed your dog(s) canned food? What do you use it for?

We never had canned food until last winter when we started testing out some Merrick food. Now we use it for special occasions and we use it to keep Katie interested in eating as the last 6 months or so, she isn't all that into eating. I think it is an old lady thing. It is super tasty and we all love the wet food.
ReplyDeleteMr. N's appetite has been lagging a little bit lately too. I'm wondering if it's the heat.
DeleteWe do feed canned - mixed with kibble. We tend to mix it up with different brands, but Merrick is one of them.
ReplyDeleteOur dogs are trying out that food and they love it. We just add a bit to their kibble as a treat.
ReplyDeleteMerrick is our favorite, yummy! Love Dolly
ReplyDeleteWhen we fed canned, I never thought of using it to stuff a Kong. We still have cases of canned tripe, but I'm not putting that smelly stuff in a Kong - my boyfriend would NOT be happy. LOL
ReplyDeleteTripe is rather stinky! Mr. N gets his meals in his crate so at least the mess/smell is contained.
DeleteSuch cute photos- Mr N looks pretty happy. We have been given a few samples of canned food. We'll have to try some frozen in a Kong- great idea. I always mix a spoonful of something wet in with Kilo's handful of kibble at breakfast and dinner. X Susie
ReplyDeleteCanned food was never a big hit in our house, but all your suggestions on how to use it in various ways are great!
ReplyDeleteWe don't feed canned dog food, but this looks very appetising!

Barley doesn't get much canned food, but I always keep a couple cans of sensitive stomach food on hand in case she gets into something she shouldn't and needs something a little easier on her tummy. Sometimes I'll stuff some into a Kong and put it in the freezer because that seems to keep Barley busier than plain old peanut butter in a Kong. We also occasionally get fun blends to use for special occasions like Emma and her sisters do :) Glad Mr. N found some food that lives up to his high standards :)
ReplyDeleteHe is a picky, picky wee beast.
DeleteWe like to use it to stuff in a Kong and freeze, too! We'll feed canned on occasion -- Rocco LOVES it.
ReplyDeleteEEEK! These pictures are so cute! And the food looks good, too.
ReplyDeleteThe crew gets some canned food with their kibble once or twice a week as a special treat. Their bowls are always licked clean! Merrick is a favorite around here.

We used to mix wet food in with our kibble on a more or less regular basis, but never tried Merrick (we used Ziwipeak, Wellness Core, and Great Life). We switched from kibble to raw a few months ago, and while we haven't fed any more wet food, we still have several cans in our pantry. It's always good to have a little back up plan ;-)
ReplyDeleteP.S. I do like your idea of stuffing KONG toys with wet food! I hadn't thought of that one yet ~ you just gave me an idea ;-)
ReplyDeleteWe don't use canned food became mum says it stinks the fridge out ~ Poppy
