Wordless Wednesday #90 - Sun Shield Tee Review and Giveaway

Mr. N practically lives in his Gold Paw fleeces for half the year. They are comfortable, warm and wash well. In the summer, he doesn't usually wear anything besides his cooling coat. Now Gold Paw has come out with a summer option: the Sun Shield Tee. We were sent one to review.

They come in four colors (fuchsia, grey, royal blue and turquoise heather) and are made with a lightweight jersey that is UPF 50 rated (blocks 98 percent of the sun's UV rays). Because Mr. N is light-colored and sporting a summer cut, he is especially vulnerable to the sun. Pets can also get sunburn and other ailments from too much sun exposure.

The tees are made in a wide range of sizes (2-30). Mr. N wears an eight. The tee is really thin and silky, it feels a bit like bathing suit fabric. Like Gold Paw's other products, they are sewn in the US and the tags are made with recycled materials.

Mr. N had no trouble hiking, chasing after Sage or wading in the water while wearing the tee. It didn't chafe or bother him at all. The bright turquoise color also helped with visibility because he blends right into the landscape otherwise.

I probably would not put it on him in triple digit weather (or go out for that matter!) but in lower high temperatures, it didn't seem to make him warmer. We were out in the sun for three hours this hike. This will be a welcome addition to his summer wardrobe and I'll have to research some pet sunscreens for his face.

What do you do to protect your dog from the sun?

  1. What a great idea and giveaway! Thankfully my dogs have plenty of fur and don't stay out in the sun too long either :-)

  2. I like this idea! How cool! Until recently, I didnt know they could get sun burned through their fur.

  3. We just don't go out much during the day in the summertime. It is our least active time of year.

  5. That's an excellent idea for places where it is still cool enough to wear it. I would probably swelter and melt in it. I am glad it works for Mr. N!

  6. They look comfy and they are so fashionable, or is that because it's on you Mr. N? #PAWbably

  9. Chester and Gretel are not light colored, but they do have really thin/slick hair that sits close to the skin. I do worry about too much sun for them sometimes. The shirt is cute and I like that the fabric is so thin.

  10. This shirt looks pawsome! Shiner doesn't really have any summer clothes because well... it's hot! This one looks nice though. She does have short fur, so she could probably use some sun protection.

  11. Well, I must say I am so disappointed that someone beat me to this review! I have one just like yours but haven't had a chance to try it out yet. Not to mention that I couldn't do a giveaway. Anyway, looking good Mr N! Love Dolly

  12. What a great idea! We usually limit our time in the sun, but this is perfect for someone like Mr. N who goes for longer hikes. It's so cute too!

  13. I can see that being a really great thing for dogs with a certain type of coat. (Rita has a thick double coat.) She gets hot with her black fur, so in the summer we go out early or late, stick to the shady streets in our 'hood, head to the beach, or on REALLY hot days, we just hang out inside and play games and work on her few tricks she knows.

  14. That looks like a great product for a dog with short fur. I’ll bet the small ones would fit a cat also. They should make a sun hat cos cats’ ears are so suceptible to sunburn.

  15. That looks like an awesome product! I think Phoenix could definitely use one of those because she has very short hair!

  16. Sinead is a sun worshipper from way back, and she gets cold really easily. I'll bet she would love wearing this thing... I entered!

  17. That looks like a nifty idea! My dog, Jake, would never go for it. He has long hair anyway, and doesn't like to go in the sun. Great giveaway though! Take care!

  19. What a great idea for a t shirt! I shave my little dog Phoebe down really short in Summer so I'm always careful about her not getting too much sun.

  20. We have thick enough coats so we don't need any sunscreen. Mr. N sure looks cute in his and we can see how it would help with visibility.
