Extreme Weather Conditions and Dog Walking

Portland weather can can be mercurial but there are a limited number of modes: raining, cloudy and sun. During our recent trip to the Midwest, Mr. N experienced all sorts of weather during the week we were there. A gorgeous sunny day with gusty winds that threatened to blow him away. An adventurous bathroom break in the middle of a thunderstorm. Rain with a twist of hail which had us stuffing him under a jacket and making a run for it. We narrowly avoided snow by a few days.

What's the worst weather you walked your dog in?

  1. LOL! Sounds like weather in Minnesota. We walk in all weather except for thunderstorms as they are dangerous with the lightning but occasionally we get caught in on of them too.

    1. Yeah, I was really surprised he wanted to go out in it so we made a mad dash in and out.

  2. We walk even when it's bad weather, although sometimes it isn't pleasant!

  3. We travel full time with 3 pets so we see all kinds of different weather. We try to always be well aware of the weather where we are currently as well as where we will be traveling. We have a dog that we adopted that is a tornado survivor so being aware is not only smart but it is helpful in knowing when to put his thunder shirt on. Our pets love outside and it helps to make the experience a great one.

  4. We tend to be fair weather walkers! However, on occasion we have gotten caught in a downpour. We've also walked in some snowstorms but that is kind of fun, as long as it isn't a blizzard!

    1. We haven't encountered a blizzard yet. I hope that trend continues.

  5. Crazy windy weather in Chicago when we were visiting . I held onto the leash tightly so Rocco wouldn't blow away!

  6. Here in NJ, we've walked in hurricanes, blizzards, the aftermath of hurricanes and blizzards, and of course the blazing hot, humid summer days. All are fun adventures.

  7. It would take quite a wind to blow our guys away ... but we had blizzards when we were walking two black dogs and couldn't see them!

  8. He's so cute! I love his sweater! I've heard the midwest weather can be crazy! I think the worst weather we've been out in was probably when we lived at the inlaws when it snowed but there was a day in Oregon where we got all 4 seasons at once, including some crazy hail. I will never forget that day.

  11. We will want in the rain, cold and early morning heat but Bentley hates the rain so that is a no-go. If we ever had snow, we'd walk in it!

  12. All our cats walk on a harness and leash, but we avoid the summer heat, so they've only just starting going out again... either early in the morning or late afternoon. Our winters are very mild, so cold weather is never an issue here.

  13. Aw, the idea of Mr N under a coat is adorable!

Lilo is nnnnnot a fan of weather, so she's a fairweather walker and luckily for her, we haven't gotten caught in anything too dramatic while hiking so far. Her third 4ker did feature a thunderstorm that blew into the area hours ahead of schedule, but didn't actually break over us. We cut our summit snack short and scampered down as quick as we could, which wasn't very since that trail has a lot of steeply slanted broken ledges near the top (though not much exposure). She never even got rained on, so she was happy, but hearing the thunder and feeling the shift in the wind when we couldn't make good time was alarming for me!

  14. Rain or snow is the worst we've walked our dogs in, but nothing too bad. When Nelly was a puppy we took her on vacation and stayed at a cabin. We decided to go a big hike in the mountains and opted to leave her at the cabin. When we got to the top it started lightning and then hailing. The hail was about the size of marbles and it really hurt. I don't know if Nelly could have survived being pummeled with hail, so it was good we left her in the cabin.

  15. I don't have a dog now, but when I was growing up we had one. We had to walk him in the rain and the snow. Indiana winters are quite cold!

  16. Well, here in Florida, hurricane or not what are you supposed to do when your dog has to go potty. So I have to say the worst was a hurricane.

  17. We walked the dogs up in Steamboat Springs during a blizzard. It was so windy plus white out conditions. Two people asked if they could take a picture of Keira, my black dog, because she was totally white except for her eyes.

  18. Dexter has a thing about windy weather.

  19. Here in Georgia we have to be careful about extreme heat, especially with huskies! Walking in the summer is always a pain.

  20. Great photo! You look very dapper! Worst weather we walked in? Since our Huskies and I love snow, even a snowstorm, that rules that out as "bad" weather...so I'd say pouring, torrential rain. We try to make it fast, but Huskies do not like rain, so trying to hurry a walk when they are balking and trying to get back inside, means one thing - a soaked Mom!

  21. Mr. N is such a cutie! I love his jacket. :) We do have some crazy weather here in Michigan. It can never make up its mind. I hope that Mr. N is nice and comfortable back home.

  22. Poor Mr. N! Such treachery. We travel cross country a lot and have hit all types of weather. I guess the worst was torrential rain driving through Pennsylvania. It was so bad they kept closing down sections of the highway - we had to get off and back on the highway several times. We also had to get off the road a few times because we couldn't see! Poor dogs were trapped in the car for hours with no potty breaks!

  23. We don't go outside, but when we had the rare snowstorm two years ago, Mom Paula let us step out on the desk to feel the cold snow.

  24. I'm glad Mr. N didn't get blown away! Barley usually refuses to walk in really bad weather--she can't do anything but look for escape routes when there's thunder, so we don't even try to go out for potty breaks then; she hates getting rained on, so unless we are already out walking and get caught, we don't go out during rain showers--really the only "bad" weather we walk in is snow in below freezing temperatures, but Barley thinks that's delightful, so she'd disagree with my assessment that it's bad weather ;)
